Rolling Chassis!

Mark and Dan setting up the front suspension. It's going to take a lot of this before we tack it in place.

Upper A-arm jig, first tack done.

Mark, tacking together the upper A-arms.

Dan with a now tacked-together upper-A. Dan doesn't know if this is an exciting moment.

Testing the movement of an upper-A. For the lower A-arms we welded tube steel onto the donor car's existing A-arm. Visible in pictures below.

Testing the setup. Notice the length of the upper A - we miscalculated the size of the arms and we had to shorten them.

Notice the now shorter A-arm, with a lower A-arm and the shock. We are testing for alignment and placement.

The modified, shorter upper-A.

More aligning and placing. Notice the skinnny welding rod that is going through both sets of spherical bearings on both A-arms. We're aligning to make sure the A-arms pivot on parallel planes.

The first A-arm is tacked in place and is awaiting a shock mount. Whoohoo! Almost at a rolling chassis!

Both sides of the front suspension are now tacked in place and symmetrical. They're not perfectly aligned yet - we still have to take it apart and reassemble it many times before we do any final adjusting. Doesn't it look good?

The steering rack is about where it's going to be. We're just testing to make sure it's all going to work. This steering rack is from an MG - it has frontside steering like our donor Volvo. We forgot to get the steering rack out of our car so we had to find this one.

The first complete front corner of the car. Shock mounts in place and front right suspension assembled. Yay! We now have a rolling chassis! Well, okay, we still have to put wheels on it, but that's just a formality. And maybe working steering would make it more official...

Coming next month: a gas tank, brakes, steering, and maybe a very premature drive around the block?
