Biography

Thank you for visiting Corvid Creations, featuring my sculptural metal work. Why do I call my work Corvid Creations? Corvids are the family of birds that include crows, ravens, magpies, jays, and nutcrackers. They are very clever, intelligent birds; they like to use tools. They are social and family oriented, they like to help each other out. And they like to have fun.

A quick biography: I earned a BA from Connecticut College (New London, CT) in 1995, where I studied sculpture, photography, architecture, and environmental studies. My senior thesis art show consisted of photography exploring beautiful natural settings interrupted by environmentally disastrous industry. After college, having pursued photography on my own for several years, I was accepted to the MFA photography program at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. But, realizing I had a craving to build, I turned my focus to sculpture. Over the next year and a half I completely rebuilt an unused car garage, creating a studio with plenty of electricity, light, heat, tools, and clutter. Over the years I had been bartending as a financial means to support my struggling art habit, but in May of this year I decided to give my sculpture business a full go – I quit my day job and am pursuing art full time.

I dislike the esoteric tendencies of modern abstract art that keep it from being accessible to everyone. I like utility, humor, beauty, and simplicity. I believe that art can and should be functional: I like making sculpture that doubles as furniture, especially furniture that we use every day and tend to overlook or take for granted.

My recent pieces tend to focus on an absurdly useless function, as is evidenced by my recent coffee table "The First Table to Land on Mars." The table looks like a planetary lander and is complete with suspension, or landing gear, that works. Not that the table should ever be dropped, but if it were, it has that impact-dampening ability built into it. It is a true revolution in coffee table design!

My tendency to be distracted allows me to work on some other really fun projects. Over the past two years I have been working with some friends on building a sports car from scratch (NOT a kit car!). It is a replica Lotus 7, powered by a Volvo B-20 motor, and we call it the Votus. Another collaborative project I am working on is a chopper-bicycle with an electric motor. We call it the Mosser, and you will soon see it rolling down the Venice (CA) boardwalk. I will begin work soon on converting a gasoline-explosion powered motorcycle to a rechargeable electric one. Click here to see pictures of these projects.
